1. Is there a fee at the DMV to file my DL389?

2. Do I need a permit to take this class?

The DMV requirements vary depending on age and residency in California. In general, an individual over 21 with a valid California driver’s license or ID can take this course with no additional prerequisites.

3. How long is the course?

The course is three days: Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for a total of just under 6 hours. Please see Class Schedule & Location page for details.

4. I have passed the course. How long until I get my paperwork?

After successful completion of the course, the DL389 will be mailed to the address with which you registered with 5 to 7 business days.

5. Do I need to take my gear to the first class?

No. The first segment of the course is Thursday evening and is classroom only. You do not need to bring your gear unless you have questions about it for the instructor.

6. What is the class structure and time?

The Basic course is comprised of four segments over three days: Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. These days are set and all portions must be completed in the same week. Please see the Class Schedule & Location page for details.

7. What is the cost of the course?

The Basic course for licensing is $258 if you are over 21 and $180 if you are under 21. Please see the Class Schedule & Location page for more details.

The Intermediate Riding Clinic (IRC) cost is $250. Please see MRE Intermediate Riding Clinic page for more information.

8. I feel ill. What do I do?

9. I did not pass a portion of the course. What do I do?

If a student does not pass a portion of the course or is counseled out, the instructor will give the student a Space Available form. It details the methods for returning to MRE Corp. within the California Motorcyclist Safety Program’s timeframe.
